The Liberal Nationals will continue to respect and honour Victorians who have served our country at home and overseas.
RSL branches have been a place of support and mateship to many returned soldiers, which is why the Liberal Nationals will invest in RSLs across Victoria.
An elected Liberal Nationals Government will establish a $2 million RSL Building Maintenance Fund and offer grants of up to $30,000 to support non-gaming RSLs and other ex-service organisations.
Leader of the Liberal Party, Matthew Guy, The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, The Nationals candidate for Morwell, Sheridan Bond and the Liberal candidate for Morwell, Dale Harriman announced the Fund today at Yallourn Newborough RSL in Newborough, which will receive a $20,000 grant to upgrade the memorial garden.
The garden will enhance the General John Monash memorial, making it into a place veterans and the community can visit to reflect and remember.
The RSL Building Maintenance Fund grants will be used to maintain RSL buildings or make minor improvements to ensure our veterans are supported. The grants can also be used to upgrade or maintain cenotaphs, community memorials or Avenues of Honour.
Labor has been in power 15 of the last 19 years and has failed to adequately provide funding for RSLs leaving branches to fundraise themselves or let their buildings fall into disrepair.
Veterans continue to grow in numbers as Afghanistan and Iraq veterans retire or leave the armed services, so it is vitally important to maintain RSL buildings for the future.
Local RSLs are the lifeblood of our communities and Liberal Nationals will always support those who protect us.
Comments attributable to Leader of the Liberal Party, Matthew Guy:
“The Yallourn Newborough RSL has been such a place of support for so many returned soldiers.
The Liberal Nationals will always support those who protect us both at home and overseas.”
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Veterans, Danny O’Brien:
“RSLs across Victoria are far more than bricks and mortar, they are a haven for our returned service men and women and a hub for many communities.
But their bricks and mortar also need attention and small grants under our program will help make the local RSL more welcoming, functional and comfortable for our veterans.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Morwell, Dale Harriman:
“These grants will go a long way to supporting RSLs and other community groups who support our veterans.
Veterans have made such sacrifice to protect our beautiful country and way of life, we should honour them in any way we can.”
Comments attributable to The Nationals Candidate for Morwell, Sheridan Bond:
“Our RSLs, including Yallourn Newborough, recognise the dedication, commitment and sacrifice of our servicemen and women to their country and are a critical part of the social fabric of our communities.
This Fund will ensure our veterans in the Latrobe Valley and across Gippsland get the respect they deserve, helping to create lasting memorials, maintain cenotaphs and upgrade local facilities.”
